Inflammation is not inherently bad. It is your body's repair crew, rushing to injuries and infections and then standing down. The trouble comes when that response never fully switches off, simmering at a low level for months or years. This chronic, low-grade inflammation is silent day to day, yet it is linked to cardiovascular and metabolic risk, which is why blood markers that estimate it, above all high-sensitivity C-reactive protein, have become widely tracked.

Acute versus chronic inflammation

Acute inflammation is the familiar version: redness, heat, and swelling around a cut or the fever of an infection. It is intense, purposeful, and short-lived. Chronic inflammation is its quiet opposite, a persistent low hum with no obvious symptoms, driven by factors such as excess body fat, poor sleep, smoking, chronic stress, and certain diseases.

The distinction matters for testing. A marker like C-reactive protein rises sharply during acute illness and injury, then falls as you recover. A marker, not a diagnosis

Other markers and the bigger picture

hs-CRP is the most common inflammation marker in everyday use, but it is not the only one. Others, such as erythrocyte sedimentation rate, are used in specific clinical settings. For general cardiometabolic awareness, though, inflammation is best understood as part of a cluster, read together with lipids, glucose markers like HbA1c, and blood pressure rather than in isolation.

This is why chasing a single inflammation number rarely helps. The same lifestyle factors that raise hs-CRP, including excess weight, inactivity, poor sleep, and smoking, also move those other markers. Addressing the drivers tends to improve the whole panel, which is a more durable goal than fixating on one figure.

Testing considerations

Timing is the key variable with inflammation testing. Avoid testing during or right after an illness, injury, or intense exercise, any of which can transiently elevate the result. If a value comes back high, repeating it a few weeks later, once you are well, helps separate a genuine baseline from a temporary spike.
